Our Commitment
LostAndFound.com helps people, businesses, and organizations report, locate, claim, and return lost property.
Trust and safety are essential to this process. We work to protect personal information, limit unauthorized access, discourage fraud, and help users handle lost property responsibly.
No online platform can guarantee absolute security, prevent every fraudulent claim, or independently verify every statement made by a user. We encourage everyone using LostAndFound.com to act honestly, protect their accounts, and use reasonable care when arranging a return.
1. Accurate Reports and Honest Use
Users should provide accurate information when reporting lost or found property.
Reports should describe the item honestly and include appropriate details and photographs. Users must not knowingly submit false information, create fraudulent listings, impersonate another person or organization, submit deceptive claims, misuse identity verification, or use the platform to harass or defraud others.
LostAndFound.com may review reports of suspected misuse and remove listings or restrict accounts when appropriate.
2. Claims and Ownership Verification
Submitting a claim does not automatically establish ownership of an item or the right to receive it.
Depending on the circumstances, a claimant may be asked to provide additional information or complete identity verification. The person or organization responsible for releasing the item may need to evaluate the claim before authorizing a return.
Identity verification helps establish identity; it does not prove ownership of a particular item.
LostAndFound.com provides tools to help facilitate the process but does not make legal determinations of ownership or adjudicate competing ownership claims.
3. Personal Safety When Recovering or Returning an Item
Exercise heightened awareness for your personal safety when communicating with someone you do not know or arranging to recover or return a lost item.
If you arrange to meet someone in person, consider taking the following precautions:
- Meet in a public place. Choose a familiar, well-lit location where other people are present. When possible, consider arranging the exchange through the venue where the item was found.
- Meet during daylight hours. Whenever practical, arrange the exchange during the middle of the day rather than at night or during less busy hours.
- Bring someone with you. Consider bringing a friend or family member, and let someone else know where you are going and whom you are meeting.
- Protect your privacy. Avoid sharing your home address, daily routines, passwords, financial information, or other unnecessary personal details.
- Trust your instincts. If an interaction or proposed meeting makes you uncomfortable, do not proceed. You are not obligated to meet someone in person.
- Be alert to suspicious requests. Exercise caution if someone requests unusual payments, sensitive information, or arrangements that seem inappropriate. Use established claim or payment processes where applicable.
If you encounter suspicious activity involving LostAndFound.com, contact us at cs@lostandfound.com. If you believe you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
LostAndFound.com provides tools to help people report, locate, claim, and return lost property. We cannot guarantee the identity, intentions, conduct, or safety of other users, or the outcome of any interaction or item exchange. Users should exercise their own judgment and take appropriate precautions when communicating and arranging returns.
4. Identity Verification and Reputation
LostAndFound.com may offer or use identity verification services to help confirm a user's identity and reduce fraud.
Verification results and reputation indicators can provide additional information, but they do not guarantee that a user is trustworthy, that a claim is valid, or that an item belongs to a particular person.
Users and venues should consider the available information and follow appropriate procedures before releasing property.
Where identity verification is provided by a third-party service, that provider's own privacy practices and applicable terms may also apply.
5. Protecting Your Account
Keep your login credentials private. Use a strong, unique password that you do not use on other websites.
If you suspect someone has accessed your account without authorization, sign in to your account and change your password immediately to a strong, unique password.
If you cannot sign in or continue to suspect unauthorized access, contact cs@lostandfound.com for assistance.
Do not send your password or other login credentials by email.
6. Protecting Personal Information
Only provide personal information that is appropriate and necessary to use the service or process a claim.
Avoid including sensitive personal information in public listings, photographs, or messages when it is not needed. Do not share another person's personal information without appropriate authority or a legitimate reason.
Certain listing information may be publicly visible to help owners identify their property and connect with finders or venues. Users should review what they submit before publishing a listing.
LostAndFound.com may share information with claimants, finders, venues, authorized employees, and service providers as necessary to operate the platform, facilitate returns, provide support, maintain security, and carry out other purposes described in our Privacy Policy.
7. Data Retention and Deletion Requests
LostAndFound.com retains information for service operations, account history, property recovery, fraud prevention, dispute resolution, security, legal compliance, and other legitimate business purposes.
Some records, including expired found-item listings, are currently retained indefinitely. An expired listing, account closure, or subscription cancellation does not automatically mean that all associated information has been deleted.
You may request review of your personal information for deletion by contacting cs@lostandfound.com. We will review the request and determine what can be deleted, taking into account applicable legal obligations and legitimate security, operational, recordkeeping, and fraud-prevention needs.
Information may remain in backup systems or other records after a deletion request because of technical, security, legal, or operational requirements. The timing and extent of removal may depend on the systems and records involved.
For more information about collection, use, disclosure, retention, and privacy choices, please review the LostAndFound.com Privacy Policy.
8. Reporting Fraud or Suspicious Activity
Contact cs@lostandfound.com if you believe someone has:
- Submitted a fraudulent or misleading listing.
- Made a suspicious or potentially false claim.
- Impersonated another person, business, or venue.
- Accessed an account without authorization.
- Misused identity verification or other platform features.
- Used the platform for spam, harassment, or other prohibited activity.
Please provide the relevant listing, claim, account, or other details so we can understand the concern.
LostAndFound.com may review reports and take appropriate action, including removing listings, restricting features, or suspending or terminating accounts when warranted.
We may not be able to disclose all details of a review or action taken, particularly where doing so could affect privacy, security, or an ongoing investigation.
9. Ownership Disputes
More than one person may sometimes claim the same item. LostAndFound.com does not determine legal ownership or adjudicate competing claims.
Where a dispute cannot be resolved by the responsible venue, finder, or parties, they may need to consult law enforcement or another appropriate authority.
An item should not be released solely because a person submitted a claim or completed identity verification. The responsible party should follow appropriate procedures and consider the information available before authorizing release.
10. Safe Returns
When arranging the return of lost property, users should take reasonable precautions.
- Follow the venue's or responsible party's return procedures.
- Review the claim information before releasing an item.
- Share only the personal information needed to coordinate the return.
- Use reasonable care when arranging an in-person exchange or shipment.
- Pause the process and seek appropriate assistance if a situation appears suspicious or unsafe.
LostAndFound.com facilitates the reporting and recovery process but cannot guarantee that every item will be found, that every claim will be legitimate, or that every exchange will be completed safely.
11. Security Practices
LostAndFound.com uses reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information and help limit unauthorized access.
These measures include access controls, employee access management, audit logging, and security measures associated with our hosting infrastructure. Google Cloud provides encryption at rest for supported services; the protections available depend on the specific services used.
No internet-based service can guarantee absolute security. We continue to evaluate and improve our practices as appropriate.
If you believe you have identified a security issue, please report it to cs@lostandfound.com.
12. Third-Party Services
LostAndFound.com may use third-party providers for services such as hosting, payment processing, communications, and identity verification.
These providers may process information under their own applicable privacy policies, agreements, and legal obligations. LostAndFound.com does not control every aspect of their systems or independent privacy practices.
Please review the applicable third-party terms and privacy notices when using those services.
13. Policy Enforcement
Misuse of LostAndFound.com may result in the removal of content, restrictions on platform features, suspension of access, or account termination, as appropriate.
We may investigate reported activity and preserve relevant records when reasonably necessary to protect users, prevent fraud, maintain security, resolve disputes, or comply with legal obligations.
